The Berwyn ridge

We cannot be held responsible for your safety or for the accuracy of the guidelines given here.

Please ensure therefore that you take full responsibility for yourselves whilst out walking, paying due attention to weather, conditions, time and the routes you follow.

Walk two: the Berwyn Ridge walk

From the café, Tan-y-Pistyll, go through the gate leading to the bottom of the waterfall. Alternatively, from the base of the falls (don't cross the bridge) take the path leading off through the woods to your right.

Head up toward the wood boundary fence. Cross the stile/gate at the edge of the woods. On your left are steps that lead to top of waterfall, or follow track to the right (both take you to the top). The steps zigzag up the mountainside until they come out on the farm track close to the top.

From here, turn left, continue up the track to the top of the rise where, on your left, you will see a copse and the waterfall. Look out for a path to your left leading down to the walled wood at the top of the waterfall. Opposite this path on the right is the start of the ridge walk path that takes you up into the Berwyns.

This path leads upwards slowly at first up to the first stile (1 mile). There is a fence which now runs to the side of the path which takes you to a second stile. Cross over and continue following the fence up to the main rise to Moel Sych (826m).

From here you can cross another stile (on your right) and follow the ridge onto Cadair Berwyn (827m). It is important to remember that the ridge to your right above the lake (Llyn Lluncaws) drops off almost vertically with a 50m drop. In winter, snow can cornice over this drop giving the appearance of solid ground.

From Cader Berwyn you can again follow the path onto Bwrdd Arthur (Arthur's Saddle) and then onto Cader Bronwen.

To get back to Pistyll Rhaeadr from here, you will have to backtrack.

It is also possible to turn left (when facing Pistyll Rhaeadr) at Bwich Maen Gwynedd (half way to Cader Berwyn), dropping down toward the lake. This is the main path that comes up from Llandrillo and goes down to Pistyll Rhaeadr. This route takes you down onto the old drovers' road below Llyn Lluncaws lake, back to Pistyll Rhaeadr.
